40s/50s embroidered cotton South American Huipil top / XS - Small

Vintage 40s/50s, woven red cotton Huipil blouse with bright crewel embroidered florals and birds across chest and shoulders. In a sturdy fabric with a heavy drape, this top features a square neckline with a dark brown velvet ribbon bias trim, a loose boxy fit, small neck hole and arm holes determine its smaller size, wide velvet trim around arm holes, arm holes were altered to be slightly larger by a previous owner (see photos), charming, uneven construction along bottom hem.

NOTE • a Huipil is a traditional garment (shirt or dress) worn by indigenous women throughout South America. The style and construction of the Huipil vary from region to region. Some are ceremonial, while others are meant for daily wear. The origin of, or intention of wear for this garment are unknown to me.
